June Gardening Jobs: For Spring🌱🌸

June brings the start of summer, and with it, an explosion of growth in gardens across the UK. Now is the time to stay on top of your gardening tasks to ensure healthy plants, abundant crops, and a beautiful outdoor space to enjoy through the warmer months. Here’s your checklist of essential garden jobs to tackle this June:

1. Summer Prune Wisteria

Wisteria benefits from a twice-yearly pruning. In June or July, give it a summer tidy by cutting back all long side-shoots to around 20cm (about 6–8 inches). This helps to channel energy into flower bud formation for next spring.

2. Plant Summer Bedding

Brighten borders, pots, and containers with colourful summer bedding plants like petunias, geraniums, and begonias. Make sure to water them well, especially during dry spells, to help them establish quickly.

3. Feed Hanging Baskets & Containers

For lush blooms and vigorous growth, feed container plants and hanging baskets every couple of weeks with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser. This is especially important as nutrients in compost get used up quickly.

4. Protect Ripening Fruit

Birds love ripening berries and fruit as much as we do. Use netting or garden fleece to cover your crops and keep them safe while they ripen. Be sure the netting is taut and secured to avoid harming wildlife.

5. Mulch Thirsty Crops

Help keep the soil around beans, courgettes, and other moisture-loving crops damp by applying a layer of mulch. Organic mulches like straw, compost, or well-rotted manure also improve soil structure over time.

6. Feed Fruiting Vegetables

Now’s the time to start feeding your fruiting crops. Apply a tomato feed weekly to tomatoes, courgettes, pumpkins, and chillies. This will support flower and fruit production and improve yield.

7. Keep Watering New Plantings

Young plants still need regular watering to get established, especially during dry weather. Water deeply and early in the morning or late in the day to minimise evaporation.

8. Trim Fast-Growing Hedges

Neatly trim fast-growing hedges like privet every six weeks throughout summer to keep them tidy and encourage dense growth. Always check for nesting birds before you cut.
