How to Choose the Perfect Christmas Tree for Your Home
The Christmas tree is at the heart of festive decorating. It is where presents gather, treasured decorations are displayed and families come together throughout the Christmas season.
With so many sizes, shapes and styles available, choosing the right tree can feel a little overwhelming. From traditional green and snowy artificial trees to beautiful real Christmas trees, our helpful guide will make finding the perfect tree for your home a little easier.
Measure your space
Before choosing your Christmas tree, decide where it will stand and measure the available space carefully.

Remember to measure:
-
The height from the floor to the ceiling
-
The width of the available space
-
The depth around the tree
-
The distance from nearby furniture, doors and radiators
Leave approximately 6 to 12 inches between the top of your tree and the ceiling. If you would like to add a star or another tree topper, remember to allow a little extra room.
As a simple guide:
-
For ceilings up to 7ft, consider a 5ft or 6ft tree.
-
For ceilings around 8ft, consider a 6ft or 7ft tree.
-
For ceilings around 9ft, consider a 7ft or 8ft tree.
-
For ceilings of 10ft or more, consider an 8ft or 9ft tree.
These measurements are only a guide. A smaller tree can still create a beautiful display, particularly when placed in a decorative pot or raised safely on a suitable table.
Choose the right shape
The height of your tree is important, but its width and shape can make just as much difference.

Full Christmas trees
A full-bodied tree creates a classic, luxurious display with plenty of room for lights, baubles and statement decorations.
This style works particularly well in a living room, conservatory or open-plan space. Check the widest measurement before purchasing, as a full tree can take up more floor space once all its branches have been shaped.
Slim Christmas trees
A slim Christmas tree gives you plenty of height and festive impact without taking up as much floor space.
Slim trees are ideal for smaller living rooms, dining rooms, hallways and corners. They are also a practical choice if you do not want to move too much furniture during the festive season.
Small and tabletop Christmas trees
Small Christmas trees are perfect for bedrooms, children’s rooms, offices, kitchens and windowsills. They can also be used to create a second festive display elsewhere in your home.
Our artificial Christmas tree collection includes sizes from compact 1.5ft trees to impressive 9ft designs, giving you plenty of options for spaces large and small.

Find your favourite Christmas tree style
Once you know the size and shape you need, you can choose the look that best suits your home and decorations.

Traditional green trees
A traditional green Christmas tree is timeless and works beautifully with almost any decorating theme.
Dress it with red and gold for a classic Christmas look, add wooden decorations for a natural woodland theme or fill it with colourful baubles for a fun family display.
Snowy and frosted trees
Snowy and frosted Christmas trees bring the magic of a winter landscape indoors.
They look beautiful with white, silver, champagne, soft gold and pastel decorations. For a warmer look, add classic warm lights and decorations in rich red, burgundy, bronze or gold.
Realistic fir, pine and spruce trees
If you love the appearance of a real tree but would prefer something reusable, look for an artificial tree with carefully shaped branches and natural variations in its foliage.
Our Everlands collection includes a variety of fir, pine and spruce-inspired trees, from classic Allison Pines to realistic Nordmann Firs and Galloway Spruces.

Real or artificial: which Christmas tree should you choose?
Both real and artificial trees can create a beautiful festive centrepiece. The best choice depends on the appearance, experience and level of convenience you prefer.

Real Christmas trees
Nothing quite matches the natural character and festive scent of a real Christmas tree. Every tree is slightly different, giving your home a traditional and individual display.
Real trees need regular watering and a little more care, but choosing the tree itself can become a special part of your family’s Christmas traditions.
Our real Christmas trees are available to choose and purchase in store only.

Artificial Christmas trees
An artificial tree is convenient, reusable and easy to prepare ahead of Christmas. It will not drop needles, and you can choose the exact size, shape, finish and lighting style you prefer.
Artificial trees are particularly practical for anyone who likes to put their decorations up early or needs a specific shape to fit their room.
Our selected artificial Christmas trees are available to shop online and in store, with even more festive inspiration waiting to be discovered in our Christmas department.

Choose between a pre-lit and unlit tree
A pre-lit Christmas tree has lights already positioned among its branches, helping you create an evenly illuminated display without spending time untangling and arranging separate light sets.

A pre-lit tree could be right for you if you:
-
Want to decorate your tree quickly
-
Prefer evenly spaced lights
-
Would like fewer visible cables
-
Want a simple and coordinated appearance
Our collection includes trees with traditional LEDs, delicate micro LEDs and colourful nostalgic-style lights.
An unlit tree gives you more freedom to change your lighting from year to year. You can choose warm white, cool white, soft gold, multicoloured, compact or cluster lights to create your preferred effect.
If you already own Christmas lights that you love, an unlit tree may be the most flexible choice.

Consider your decorations
The decorations you own can also help you choose the right tree.
If you have lots of large or heavy decorations, look for a sturdy tree with plenty of well-spaced branches. If you prefer a simple display of lights and delicate baubles, a fuller tree with dense foliage can provide an attractive backdrop.
Snowy trees already have plenty of visual detail, so they can look beautiful with fewer decorations. Traditional green trees provide a versatile base for larger and more colourful collections.
Whichever style you choose, take time to shape every branch when assembling an artificial tree. Opening the smaller tips and adjusting the individual branches will make your tree look fuller and more natural.
Complete your Christmas tree
The right accessories can transform the finished appearance of your tree.
A tree skirt or tree ring disguises the stand and creates an attractive base for your presents. Choose from natural willow, decorative metal, traditional festive characters and even pre-lit designs.
If you are purchasing an artificial tree, a purpose-made storage bag will help keep its sections together and protect it from dust between Christmases.
Complete your display with:
-
Compact, cluster or traditional string lights
-
A coordinating tree skirt
-
A festive tree topper
-
Garlands, ribbons and decorative picks
-
A Christmas train set around the base
